Last week I proclaimed that we will start a veggie and flower garden as part of our 2012 goals. Well, I wasn't kidding. This project has been on Joe's mind for quite some time. Since LAST summer he has been acquiring books and magazines about gardening and landscaping. He has been pouring over these resources, making notes and drawing plans. It is incredible. I might be known as the plant person around here, but it will soon be Joe who holds all the botanical knowledge. There is honestly not too much I like seeing more than Joe with a plant book or gardening magazine taking notes and making lists. Seriously, I love it! We are currently planning 3 kinds of landscape and garden beds: the front yard landscape (a part sun drought tolerant area), the backyard near Ruby's swing (shade and water loving) and a vegetable/flower bed (sunny and watery). In January we made a yard plan. The ideas for the backyard looked something like this:

Cryptic, right? The front yard is a bit more planned out. We are basing our plans off of this plan I found on the Better Homes & Gardens' website.
Joe is in charge of the veggies, while I take on the flower cutting bed. For our vegetable garden bed, Joe has been reading the
Square Foot Garden book from front to back. And for the flowers, I am just picking out my favorite varieties (I like color and big blooms).
