The dead Mall

Even though we only live 7 miles away from where we previously lived, we are in a completely new part of town. One I am learning about and exploring for the first time. This past weekend Joe and I set out for a Sears trip to look for various house items. I was thinking we would go to the usual Sears in the South County Mall, but Joe decided to save some time and go down the street to the Crestwood Mall, I mean, Crestwood Court.

I have heard stories of the Crestwood Court. Like a few other malls in greater St. Louis, the Crestwood Mall has all but vanished. What once was a nice mall with Dillards, Sears and Famous Barr as anchors, all there is now are a handul of vendors and Sears. Most of it has been rented out to art or dance studios. It's a ghost town, with few shoppers. At least parking is easy!

Like most zombie enthusiasts, I can't enter into a mall without thinking "Dawn of the Dead." Most of the time its kinda fun to imagine the bustling commericial mall scene as a deserted fortress during a zombie apocalypse. It is entertaining to see what stores have to offer that might help you survive a societal meltdown. However, walking into Crestwood Court I immediately got an eerie feeling. I didn't have to try and imagine this as a deserted space. It was presented to me as such.

As we walked past empty store after empty store, I wondered, would zombies be attracted to a mall where there are no stores? It was thought in the Dawn of the Dead, that people were returning to the mall as zombies because the brain was on autopilot and this was a place where people just flocked, for no real reason. But would they to Crestwood Court?

After shopping in a very hot Sears, we were both very thirsty and quite hungry. We found the food court only to find everything, including the bathrooms, was closed. On our way back out to the truck, we passed by a delicious smelling food vendor. She was open and selling sandwiches! While we waited for our food to be ready, Joe showed me a flyer he had found sitting on the counter.

Amazing. I will SO be there.
